  • enhance or improve the fruit development
  • vascular tissue differentiation
  • control the cellular elongation
  • involved in apical dominance and various tropisms
  • stimulate of ethylene release 
Cytokinins
  • affect cell division
  • delay senescence
  • activate dormant buds
Gibberellins
  • Initiate mobilization of storage materials in seeds during germination
  • stem elongation
  • stimulate bolting in biennials
  • stimulate pollen tube growth
Abscisic Acid
(ABA)  
  • maintains dormancy in seeds and buds
  • stimulates the closing of stomata
Ethylene
  • ripening of climacteric fruits
  • promotion of the abscission
  • aerenchyma tissue (in submerged stems) formation 
  • determines sex in cucurbits
Jasmonates
  • response to environmental stresses
  • control seed germination
Brassinolides
  • promote elongation and cell division
  • stimulate flowering 
  • affect tropic curvature
Salicylic Acid (SA)
  • activates genes involved with plant's defense mechanisms

Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria and US Meat

Let's go back to highlight a couple of reports that came out a couple weeks ago. They did not get the attention they deserved in the media, and I neglected to post when they first came out. The FDA published its 2011 Summary Report on Antimicrobials Sold or Distributed for Use in Food-Producing Animals .  Under the Animal Drug User Fee Amendments, codified in the Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act at 21 U.S.C. � 360b, sponsors of applications for new animal drugs that contain an active antimicrobial ingredient are required report to the FDA each year, providing data on the amount of sold or distributed for use in food-producing animals. The law also now requires that FDA make the information compiled public. The report is not publicized, and it provides only the bare numbers. However, given that such a large percentage of the antibiotics produced in the U.S. are used for livestock feed, and given concerns about antimicrobial resistance, the report provides important information.

Some Thoughts on our Global Food System

I began my day reading the blog post on the Marler Blog about the listeria traced to frozen vegetables. Bill Marler, Frozen Vegetables with Listeria Linked to Illnesses and Deaths in Washington, California and Maryland,  Marler Blog (May 3, 2016). According to the post, "On April 23, 2016, CRF Frozen Foods recalled 11 frozen vegetable products because they may be contaminated with Listeria. On May 2, 2016, CRF Frozen Foods expanded the initial recall to include all organic and traditional frozen vegetable and fruit products processed in its Pasco, Washington facility since May 1, 2014."  CRF sells frozen vegetables under "various brand names." I had never heard of CRF Frozen Foods, so I decided to check which brands were affected. I think that most people would be astounded to see all of the different brands that CRF supplies. I was.
